Pinocchio



Once upon a time, there was a woodcarver, called Geppetto who lived without a child. So he decided to make a puppet and named him ‘Pinocchio’. As he began to carve the wood, in surprise, Pinocchio laughed at him. When Geppetto was getting finished, the puppet kicked the old man and ran out of the door.

As Pinocchio was running on the street, a policeman caught him but people said to the policeman that the puppet belongs to Geppetto. So the policeman arrested the old man instead of Pinocchio.

Pinocchio had to remain alone at home and felt hungry so, he tried to cook an egg. As it put on a hot pan, a little chicken flew away. Then he sat by the fire. When Geppetto came to the house, the old man saw the puppet’s feet had burnt. Geppetto then made his new feet and some clothes to go to school like a real boy. Geppetto was so poor because he had to sell his coat for Pinocchio’s textbook.

On the school way, Pinocchio heard some exciting music came from a puppets show. He went there and joined its show with them. At first the puppet master angry with Pinocchio but later he made a friend with Pinocchio and gave him five gold coins

One day a fox and cat came to him. Pinocchio ran and climb a tall oak tree. Luckily Pinocchio was rescued by a beautiful blue fairy who lived nearby. The fairy asked about his coins. He said that he had lost his money. Then his nose began to grow longer and longer. The fairy laughed and said.” that what happens when you lie.”


Rapunzel



A pregnant woman sent her husband to a witch’s garden to pick up some rapunzel (salad plant) since she was craving it. The witch caught the husband for stealing from her garden. She told him that he could take some plant but she would get the baby when it’s born. The husband agreed and brought some plants to his wife.

When the baby was born, the witch took the girl. When the girl was old enough, the witch locked her in a tower with no exit. The only way to get in was by having Rapunzel throw down her hair so that the witch could climb it.

One day, a prince came by and saw the witch climbing the hair into the tower, and after the witch left, he called out, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.” She lowered her hair, he climbed up and they began an epic love story until the witch founds out.

The witch cut off the girl’s hair, and sent her into the wild, wait for the prince to come. When the prince was climbing up the witch dropped him. The prince fell. He was blind and roamed the land in search of Rapunzel.

Eventually, he found her. Rapunzel cried into his eyes. The tears cured him of his blindness. They returned to his kingdom to live happily ever after.


Rabbit and Bear



Once upon a time, there lived as neighbors, a bear, and a rabbit. The rabbit is a good shot. On contrary, the bear is always clumsy ad could not use the arrow to a good advantage.

One day, the bear called over the rabbit and asked the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and came with the bear to the other side of the hill. The rabbit feared to arouse the bear's anger so he could not refuse it. He consented and went with the bear and shot enough buffalo to satisfy the hungry family. Indeed he shot and killed so many that there was lots of meat left after the bear and his family had loaded themselves and packed all they could carry home.

The bear was very gluttonous and did not want the rabbit to get any of the meat. The rabbit could not even taste the blood from the butchering as the bear would throw earth on the blood and dry it up. The poor rabbit would have to go home hungry after his hard day's work.

The bear was the father of five children. The youngest child was very kind to the rabbit. He was very hearty eater. The mother bear always gave him an extra-large piece of meat but the youngest child did not eat it. He would take it outside with him and pretended to play ball with the meat. He kicked toward the rabbit's house and when he got close to the door he would give the meat with such a great kick. The meat would fly into the rabbit's house. In this way, the poor rabbit would get his meal unknown to the papa bear.


The Story of Timun Mas



One night, while they were praying, Buto Ijo a giant with supernatural powers passed their house. He heard them pray. "Don't worry farmers. I can give you a child. But you have to give me that child when she is 17 years old," said Buto Ijo. The farmers were so happy. They did not think about the risk of losing their child's letter and agree to take the offer. Later, Buto Ijo gave them a bunch of cucumber seeds. The farmers planted them carefully. Then the seeds changed into plants. No longer after that, a big golden cucumber grew from plants. After it had ripe, the farmers picked and cut it. They were very surprised to see a beautiful girl inside the cucumber. They named her Timun Mas or Golden Cucumber. Years passed by and Timun Mas has changed into a beautiful girl. On her 17th birthday, Timun Mas was very happy.

However, the parents were very sad. They knew they had to keep their promise to Buto Ijo the giant but they also did not want to lose their beloved daughter. "My daughter, take this bag. It can save you from the giant," said father. "What do you mean, Father? I don't understand," said Timun Mas.

After that, Buto Ijo came into their house. "Run Timun Mas. Save your life!", said her mother. Buto ijo was angry. He knew the farmers wanted to break their promise. He chased Timun Mas away. Buto Ijo was getting closer and closer. Timun Mas then opened the bag and threw a handful of salt. It became sea. Buto Ijo had to swim to cross the sea. Later, Timun Mas threw some chilly. It became a jungle with trees. The trees had sharp thorns so they hurt Buto Ijo. However, he was still able to chase Timun Mas. Timun Mas took her third magic stuff. It was cucumber seeds. She threw them and became a cucumber field. However, Buto Ijo still could escape from the field. Then it was the last magic stuff she had in the bag. It was a shrimp paste or terasi. She threw it and became a big swamp. Buto Ijo was still trying to swim in the swamp, but he was exhausted. Then he was drowning and died.

Timun Mas then immediately went home. The farmers were so happy that they finally together again.


The Legend of Nyi Roro Kidul, The Queen of South Ocean



Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Kadita. Because of her beauty, she was called Dewi Srengenge. It meant the goddess of the sun. Her father was King Munding Wangi. Although he had a beautiful daughter, he was unhappy because he always expected to have a son.

The king decided to marry Dewi Mutiara. He had a son from her. Dewi Mutiara wanted her son to become a king in the future. She asked the King to send his daughter away. The king did not agree.

Dewi Mutiara called a black wizard to curse Kadita. She wanted Kadita’s beautiful body full of ulcers. Then, Kadita’s body was full of ulcers. It smelled bad. The beautiful princess cried.

The King was sad. No one could cure his daughter’s illness. The king did not want her daughter to be a rumor so he sent her away.

The poor princess did not know where to go. However, she had a noble heart. She did not have any bad feelings about her stepmother. She walked for almost seven days and seven nights. Then, she came to the Southern Ocean. The ocean was so clean and clear. She jumped into the water and swam.

Suddenly, there was a miracle. The ocean water cured her illness. She became more beautiful than before. She also had the power to command the whole South Ocean. She became a fairy called Nyi Roro Kidul or The Queen of South Ocean.
